What Is Local SEO? How Local Search Actually Works

A plain-English explanation of local SEO: what it is, the three factors Google names, and which signals actually move your rankings. If you want the step-by-step method instead, read our guide on how to rank in local search.

Local SEO is the work of getting your business shown to people searching nearby. Google decides those rankings on three things it names publicly: relevance, distance and prominence. Almost every tactic worth doing improves one of the three.

Local search is a separate ranking system from ordinary organic results. You can sit at position one for a national term and still be invisible in the map pack three suburbs away, because the local algorithm weighs different things.

This guide explains the system underneath local search. Once it makes sense, two pages take it further: our how to rank in local search guide is the step-by-step method, and Google Business Profile management covers the single most important asset in more depth. If you would rather someone did it for you, that is our local SEO service.

What Local SEO Actually Is

Local SEO is the practice of ranking in the results Google shows when a search has local intent: the map pack, Google Maps, and the organic results tied to a place.

Two searches make the difference obvious. "Best cordless drill" returns a national organic page. "Emergency electrician" returns a map with three businesses, their ratings and a call button. The second is a local result, and a different set of signals decides who appears.

The Three Factors Google Names

Google documents its local ranking as relevance, distance and prominence. Everything else in local SEO is a way of influencing one of those three.

Distance is the reason a competitor two streets from the searcher can outrank a far better business four suburbs away. It is also why chasing a single city wide ranking is usually the wrong goal. You are not trying to rank in a city, you are trying to rank across the area you can profitably serve.

Which Signals Matter Most

Practitioner surveys such as the Local Search Ranking Factors study, run for years by BrightLocal and Whitespark, consistently put the Google Business Profile itself at the top, followed by reviews, links and on page signals, with citations lower than most owners expect.

Treat the published percentages loosely, because they are expert opinion rather than data from Google. The ordering, however, has been stable for years and is worth trusting.

The Moving Parts

Local SEO is not one project. It is five workstreams that reinforce each other, and neglecting any one of them caps the others.

The Order to Fix Things

Sequence matters more than effort. Most businesses start with the hardest, slowest work and never touch the changes that would have moved rankings in a fortnight.

Illustrative example

A two van electrical firm spent six months writing blog posts and saw nothing. The primary category on the profile was set to "Contractor" rather than "Electrician", the profile listed no services, and the newest review was fourteen months old. Correcting the category and asking every customer for a review for eight weeks did more than the six months of blogging, because the first change fixed relevance and the second fixed prominence.

How Long It Takes

Profile changes can move rankings within days. Reviews compound over weeks. Links and citations take months. Anyone promising page one in a fortnight is selling something.

Key Takeaways

Local SEO rewards businesses that are close, complete, well reviewed and consistent. That is most of it.
